The New Spiral Island British environmentalist and eco-pioneer Richart “Rishie” Sowa, who believes in recycling and low-impact living, has built his own floating island in a lagoon by Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The island is built on over 100 000 plastic bottles and is about 20m in diameter. It has beaches, a house where Sowa lives, 2 ponds, a solar-powered waterfall/river, and solar panels. Mangroves, palmtrees and other plants are growing on it. This is the second Island Sowa has built; The first was destroyed in a hurricane in 2005.

Spiral Island in the Riviera Maya

We find ourselves with a floating work of art! And it is nothing more that spiral Island by Richart “Rishi” Sowa British artist.

Commencing in 1998 this natural magnificence, after a significant collection of plastic bottles with which he began to make a floating structure, which they overlaid and bamboo veneers.

And we see that he could do a whole island close to the canals of Puerto Aventuras, we can observe its surprising ability .

Sowa actually created an entire fabulous ecosystem. We see that the island has very little vegetation, such as mangroves, palapas, small ponds, all of this he make it thanks to his great ingenuity and imagination of the space.

In 2005 the hurricane Emily pulled him to one of the nearby beaches almost in one piece thanks to  the age of this island that was built seven years ago and the roots of their mangroves, of the plants have helped her to remain in one piece. After this incident Sowa decided he was going to rebuild it again, but now it closer to Isla Mujeres and is now called” JOYSEE” BY Rishi SOWA

This island rebuilt currently has

20Mts of diameter (66ft) floating

4.6 meters high (15ft)

Its structure comprises 150.000 bottles as a base and he achieved its objective, an island with white sand beach, plants, palapas, waterfalls, rivers.

Truly a great work of art.
